The politicians who dragged their feet about this are all evidently unable to grasp the idea of exponential growth. That’s going to end up killing people, unfortunately. Unfortunately, probably an awful lot of them. And I use “awful” carefully.
The Florida governor leaves beaches open for spring break, hundreds (more likely thousands) get infected — many stay in Florida, but many others return to their homes throughout the country — and Florida sets itself up to become the next hot spot of infection.
Even though Florida was late to the infection game, it is now quickly rising in the charts, rapidly surpassing other states.
Instead of learning from the governors who acted early, immediately and aggressively, most notably Gavin Newsom of California (whose state had the first confirmed community transmission) or Jay Inslee of Washington (whose state had the first deaths), Ron DeSantis of Florida denied the science, ignored the experts and delayed and deferred as the embers of infection festered.
Now all of a sudden he wants to start acting. He issues a stay-home order (but exempts large gatherings at churches, whose religious superstitionists believe that prayer that can’t stop bullets can stop viruses, where their denial of Darwin will allow natural selection to work against them and help our species evolve forward a bit), but it is too little, too late, and the “Sunshine State” is about to get burned.
Hollywood: “Hey! Lissen ta this – we take that film The Andromeda Strain, cross it with Outbreak, toss in a whole lot of the mayor from Jaws… And a bunch of… Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas! Waddya think?” “Charlie, you’re insane! But brilliant. Can you just see the sequels?” Ladies and gentlemen, coming soon… COVIDfefe-45 XXVII – This time it’s personal! (A DeSantis/Rump Production). We know you’re just dying to see it.
And here in Kentucky, our Democratic Governor has actually handled the situation so well that even Die-Hard Republicans are applauding him! It’s nice to see that not ALL Kentucky Politicians are utter morons, unlike a couple of CORRUPT, IGNORANT U.S. Senators and Representatives that I could mention…
Two of Florida’s biggest industries are retirement care of the elderly and cruising (look at jobs at the ports of Miami and Ft Lauderdale). It is very interesting to see how DeSantis is looking out for them.
The Gops are a cargo cult that believe that if they can keep up the outward signs of government—suits, ties, dinners, office titles—they don’t have to actually govern or consider the logic or ethics of what they’re doing. Just like their treatment of religion.
Like I said before, with very few exceptions, it is the Democratic governors, mayors, and county executives rising to the occasion. The Republicans have plenty of blood on their hands, either because of incompetence, dishonesty, cowardice, or “other” (one lunatic in Kansas, the former head of the Kansas GOP party, called COVID-19 a “glorified cold” fer chrrissakes!). Trump himself, although he won’t admit it (and doesn’t remember it) was briefed on the serious national security threat in DECEMBER. And was publicly calling the virus outbreak a “hoax”, designed to lower his poll numbers, as recently as FEBRUARY 28th. And that was in PUBLIC! (I know that many Trump voters don’t understand modern technology, such as audiotape and videotape and the printing press, but c’mon!)

Due to rising sea levels, not even dead Floridians can stay in their homes.

Apparently the sentiment is that when given orders to stay home, rethugicans believe that freedom dies, not themselves. Imagine their surprise…

Someone on diSantis’ staff said that Rick Scott, the criminal previous governor, royally screwed things up in the process of making himself look good.

There is a silver lining in most clouds.. just think of all the real estate and vacancies in old age homes that will be available once this is over.

Another idiot Trump disciple. Will this virus or Trump prove out to be more difficult to get rid of?
