The big difference now is that the Russians will help Bernie win the nomination only. That’s because they believe he’s the easiest likely nominee for Trump to defeat in the fall. They’re going to stick with their idiot Trump. Why wouldn’t they?

As lifelong conservative and former Republican strategist, Rick Wilson (author of "Running Against the Devil: A Plot to Save America From Trump—and Democrats From Themselves) correctly points out, Trump’s handlers are SALIVATING at the idea of Sanders being the nominee. (They would be frothing at the mouth if it were Bloomberg—different matter entirely.) The Trump attack machine would call any Democratic nominee a “socialist”, of course, but somebody who calls himself a “social democrat”? (Not to mention his USSR and Cuba easily-exploitable weaknesses.) If Sanders is the nominee the turnout will be immense on both sides, but in all probability more people will vote against him than for him. Because they would be running scared after all the Trump attack machine’s bombing the living hell out of Sanders. (Btw, Wilson’s other book, “Everything Trump Touches Dies” is ALSO an excellent read.)

I disagree wholly with Rick Wilson, @Godfreydaniel. Bloomberg frightens #45 because they are too similar, and Bloomberg can out-fight #45 not in debates but in actual wealth. #45’s whole message is “I’m rich because I’m smart, vote for me.” (Plus a lot of “I’m racist just like you!”) Bloomberg is richer, and can prove it without Russian backing, he’s another New Yorker, he’s just as racist, but he’s smarter – and he’s got LOTS of money to spend, even without the Democratic Party backing him.

To be clear: If Bloomberg wins the nomination (which seems unlikely so far, but no one knows yet), I will still vote for him, but not before. He’s just a shinier, less corrupt #45, fighting for the rights of the rich.

And in fact the Republican Party (not #45, whose ego is his overriding concern, or the Trumpanistas who are relying on #45 to cover for their utter ineptitude) would LOVE the idea of Bloomberg v. #45: they win both ways: regardless of who wins, their rich sponsors are the real winners. Welcome to the corporate state.

They said the same thing about George W. Bush.

They said the same thing about Bill Clinton.

They said the same thing about Ronald Reagan.

They said the same thing about Jimmy Carter.

They said the same thing about Richard Nixon.

They said the same thing about John F. Kennedy.

They said the same thing about Harry Truman.
