My father was briefly a Mess Sgt. He often told the tale of coming into a camp that had been disused for a few years (Stateside) and he managed to get a kitchen up and running and the troops fed. I often wondered if he had embroidered that a bit. After he passed on I was going through his papers and found a commendation for doing exactly that. I stopped doubting anything he had told me.
