    They have to simplify history if they’re ever going to keep up with all the new stuff that keeps being added.

    Good teachers simplify by pointing at patterns. And by skipping lightly over the parts that really aren’t relevant. Not-so-good teachers teach exactly what they learned in college a couple of hundred years ago, more or less.

    I hated  history because the teachers insisted that I be able perfectly to spell the names of historical figures, remember exactly what date a war started or ended, when somebody died, etc. I passed, mostly because my mother convinced me that memorizing useless trivia that I’d forget 10 seconds after the final was better than the alternative. I do, now, know quite a bit about the broad flow of events, the sociology behind some of the interesting movements, etc. etc. And I still cannot remember names or dates.
