I doubt that works for many people under the age of 60 or so. Maybe 65? I’m 55, and can just barely recall the tune.

I took the risk of an earworm and looked for this on YouTube. I’m not sure if I’d ever heard it before, but I don’t think having it running through my head is going to be an issue. Maybe there’s a different song with the same name that actually is catchy.

As someone who live in the East Bay Area, this ranks up there with one the most annoying songs ever (“Are You Going to San Francisco” is #1 in my books because I live 30 minute drive away)

It’s a small world after all,

    It’s a small, small world! ♫

She should have answered “I’ve been away so long. I may go wrong and lose my way!” Or maybe Rat should have asked this way. After all, he’s the one who lost his way. I wonder why there are so many songs about Hollywood wannabe actors failing. Do you remember “It never rains in Southern California?”

A few years back me and a friend were lost. We stopped at a gas station to ask for directions. Half a dozen people in the gas station said they had lived around there for many years and had never heard of the road we were looking for. As we sat in the truck looking at the map I just happen to look up. I seen the road sign across the street. It WAS the road we were looking for. I went back into the gas station and pointed the sign out to them. They all were like dumb founded. They did not know the names of the streets they had drove everyday for years.

L.A. is a great big freeway

Put a hundred down and buy a car

In a week, maybe two, they’ll make you a star

Weeks turn into years. How quick they pass

And all the stars that never were

Are parking cars and pumping gas

Some songwriters try to say something, in a poetic fashion, that will make you think. Others just try to make it stick in your brain, no matter how annoyingly.

Burt Bacharach & Hal David, alas, fall firmly in the second camp.

About 20 years ago, I stopped at a service station in the Dallas area to ask for directions. Instead of giving me a straight answer, the guy behind the counter started to give me a rash of B.S. I turned to the three or four women in line behind me and stated, “Ladies, this is why guys don’t like to ask for directions. Once you admit you are lost, you lose all respect in the eyes of other guys like this one.”
