The key to going nowhere fast, is not in the glove compartment!

Never got to yesterday’s comments on Agnes…

    but I meant to say….

    I couldn’t believe it…. I drove, not a ’78, but a 1976 Volare, for 15 years!

Bought it for $700, not second, but umpteenth, hand, when it was 10 years old and already had 90,000 miles on it….

It was, indeed, a supercar, whose engine and transmission would still be going, if other things hadn’t fallen apart.

Well… the engine did need a valve job, at about 115,000 … a couple of different mechanics said to throw it away cos it would cost more than the car was worth…

Got a backyard whiz kid to do it for $450… he promised me another 50 thousand miles and it went 125,000….

all the way to 240,000, before it was forced into retirement by smog equipment failure….

By then it needed thousands in other repairs anyway…

various electronic things, brakes, tires, major dents from a hit and run while it was parked…

and somebody ahead of me on the freeway had thrown a can out of a window that cracked my windshield…

So I reluctantly sold it to a junkyard…. they gave me $27 for my precious relic.

Mine was a beige station wagon, not a red sedan like this….

and anyway, this one is drawn as a basic comic strip car, not exactly a real Volare.

It had all its tires and windows, of course…. but other than that, I think by the end, mine looked more beat up.

But it never stopped cruising effortlessly down the freeway at 75mph.

    Did I say 75…. I mean 60, of course… (cough).

And I, too, always heard “Volare” in my head… I even named the car “Blue.”

I discovered that its Slant 6 engine did have a certain magic to it….

Guys who knew all about cars, and guys who hardly knew how to check the oil….

EVERY guy who I ever told it had a Slant 6 said the same thing: “Oh. That’s a good engine.”

Those exact words. It always cracked me up.

This is like the new “Stranded on a Desert Island” Meme. First place I saw it was on “The Barn”, now “Agnes”. Next stop The World! ☺

Check the trunk for dead bodies, they will continue to stink up the car until you remove them.
