Many years ago there was a local who’s last name was Piggee. So the rude cuss names his daughters “ima’ and “ura’. Say it out loud together with the last name.
There was an Odness family in my hometown. Because I grew up there, I never realized it was funny until I thought about it from an outsider’s point of view. There was also a Phoebe Wiebe—her married name with her third husband. I heard there was a Riva Durtsche, but I think that was made up.
I always figured if I had a daughter (I did have a stepdaughter for a time) I would NOT name her Diane. (Now hold on there and I’ll explain.) The name “Diane” is often shortened to “Di”. The way my last name is spelled it is commonly mispronounced as “Ree-ah”. Would YOU deliberately name a kid “Di Ree-ah”?
I read an article about people who adopted what they though were “cool” sounding ethnic names without researching them, only to later find out the translations ranged from “idiot” to “one too stupid to come out of the rain” and so on.
