Fun fact: after this strip was published, paleontologists actually DID discover a theropod larger than Tyrannosaurus that specialized in hunting sauropods called Giganotosaurus.

Of course, it was nowhere near as large as Calvin’s Calvinosaurus…I don’t think it’s anatomically possible for an animal to grow that large.

Was the guy who made the first Godzilla movie the Japanese version of Calvin?

Where I grew up, digging wasn’t really an option (not even with dynamite: My dad tried that…). So we mostly poked around under the cacti looking for skeletons. And on them looking for grasshoppers the shrikes had put on the spines.

Forget the vicious allosaurs; think of the not-so-vicious some-osaurs.

I once started to dig a hole in the side of our hill so I could have a hobbit house…didn’t get very far!

Dug in the right place this time.

Digging a hole that size? I don’t see Calvin expending that much effort at anything.

Calvin would be a paleontologist.

that’s an impressive hole, but any fossil hunter would know that you wouldn’t find fossils in the topsoil, you need to go down into the bedrock, or find a place where the bedrock is exposed like a cliff face. When I was a kid (not quite 6, but still less than 10) I actually found some fossil shells by cracking open rocks. I believe the rocks were slate or shale, a common type of sedimentary rock, I didn’t even need to dig for them, they were lying on the ground in the woods.

Sunday C&H is such a treat, Mr Watterson plainly loves to draw, and in the Sunday strips he can really spread his wings. Delightful.

The depth Calvin has excavated even the tooth of calvinosaurus would not get fossiled.

Digging that hole seems like A LOT more work that had to be done than if he’d just apply himself in school LOL.

When I was a kid, I dug for fossils in my backyard. Like Calvin, I didn’t find anything. (Thankfully, I didn’t hit a sewer pipe.)
