The NEC (National Electrical Code) requires a burial depth for unprotected conductors of 12 to 24 inches, depending on the type of service and location. The local cable TV providers are satisfied when their installers provide enough covering so that a casual observer can’t see the cable. A 1/2 to 1 inch groove in the dirt is adequate for that purpose as far as they’re concerned.
About 10 years ago I wanted to plant a tree in my backyard. I had the people come over to document where everything was. It turned out the gas line, electrical lines, and the cable lines had been laid randomly all over the yard, completely independent of each other. There was absolutely no sense to how they were laid. Consequently I had to change where I was going to plant the tree. If I hadn’t had all of that mapped, I would have dug into 2 cables that crossed like a giant X.
