On a recent visit to Home Depot I was waited on by a 79 year old clerk. I noted his age was near mine and he said I could get a job there, they were looking for people. Several workers are elderly. Lots of help wanted signs in the city. Yet lots and lots of freeway beggars. Lots of tent cities. I think that drugs are key causal ingredient in this twisted society.

Does the “big box” refer to the size of the store or the size of Costco’s products?

That box looks bigger than my apartment. Hmmm… waterproof it, reinforce the walls a bit, maybe add a solar power system and a water collection system and it will be better than my apartment.

The guy who runs one of the main shelters here said that the corner beggars are making a buttload of money. They aren’t homeless, and, yes, it is a racket where they have to pay a mafia for a spot or get badly “hassled.” One of the local news stations did a story featuring a retired beggar. He was very forthcoming and explained that it’s a scam. He used to drive a new Mercedes, park a few blocks away and gather so much each day, he regularly made over 100K annually. Real homeless people do go to the charities or they have such profound substance abuse and psychospiritual issues, that they want to be left alone and homeless.

Don’t give him any cash – he’ll just use it to buy jumbo jars of cheese puffs!

Unfortunately, the Government isn’t the only cause… where a LOT of younger people are concerned, they can make more money, per week, begging on the roadside, as opposed to working, and don’t have to pay taxes on it, as well. There are jobs… they just don’t want to fill them.
