Supporting the troops does NOT mean supporting the defense contractors with trillions of dollars.

Amazes me that we are spending all this money on the military when the enemies are being welcomed into the oval office with open arms and gushes of praise

Leaving aside the “trillions” in mineral wealth that supposedly exist in Afghanistan, which, like the oil in Iraq, America had neither claim nor right to; Afghanistan has been log known as the “Graveyard of Empires” because due to it’s government and it geography, it is almost impossible to either conquer or hold and the historians in the pentagon “think tanks” knew this going in.

The “surgical strike” against bin Laden’s camp was one thing, and, quite possibly would have worked, had not Bush/Chaney and their generals not been distracted by a desire to exact revenge on the ruler of Iraq/ seize Iraq’s oil fields, but the attempt to conquer and hold massive amounts of territory quite another.

That NEVER works against a country and a society such as Afghanistan. Some of the would-be invaders in the history of Afghanistan include the Maurya Empire of ancient India, Alexander the Great of Macedon, Umar, an Arab Caliphate, Genghis Khan of Mongolia, Timur of Persia and Central Asia, the Mughal Empire of India, various Persian Empires, the British Empire, the Sikh Empire, the Soviet Union, … That last, lengthy enumeration of would-be “conquerors” is from “Wikipedia”, an excellent source of practically any information you might need (and “Wikipedia” could certainly use a tiny bit of financial assistance, right now, people…)

The real cost of that goes far beyond the mere waste of money that could be better spent. It is in the tragic loss of the lives of so many members of the Military sent on that fool’s errand. Add to that the physical and mental damage inflicted on the survivors who will have to deal with that for the rest of their lives.
