Ted, you seem to want a president who will come in and make everything right. This president would be, in your mind, a benevolent autocrat. Your dream is shared by too many people, and we end up with executive overreach. My dream – which I think is a good one – is a Congress that does what it is supposed to and a president who doesn’t have to wield so much executive power.
In an as yet unpublished poll asking television-savvy middle schoolers what they want to be when they grow up, the top responses are: “wealthy,” “obeyed,” “intimidating,” “feared,” “unopposed,” “adulated,” “immune from prosecution,” “louche,” “boorish,” and “pardoned.”
Guess we Boomers better hurry up and bleed ’em out. Before they get to cut our Social Security. Leave them under the Tree of Life. Like brown owls leave owl pellets.
Oh, Ted. No one of any age actually dreams of being an incrementalist President. They dream of obtaining power, wealth, and prestige. It’s that dream that leads one to go into politics and then selling out to corporate interests. Advocating incrementalism is just a way to keep corporate donors happy so that sweet, sweet corporate cash keeps flowing into the coffers.

I dream of being a political cartoonist who viciously attacks everyone and then wonders why no one likes me.

Yes, incremental progress is not as good as massive regression. Republicans are quite happy with that.
