When Crane married, his wife made him promise no longer to depict the female nude from life. So, as can be seen here, he resorted to basing his female nudes on male models, doing his best to make the appropriate alterations on the basis of memory and imagination.

Putting birdseed in her hair did wonders for its body, but the following it attracted was annoying.
