This is a complicated relationship. Andy tries to do what SHE thinks is right for her family (but they don’t think of it that way), but she knows that her mom does things differently, and it is the more popular way. Her mom is totally undermining her daughter’s relationship with her family (she may even be doing it deliberately to be the number one person with her daughter’s family). Andy is feeling threatened, but doesn’t know how to stop it. Or I could be barking up the wrong tree.
