It would be interesting to see a breakdown of payments. I’ve been paying for comics online for years but have generally given up on printed newspapers. The local here isn’t fit to wrap fish, the weekly from the old homestead I get to keep up on the living and the dying.
As someone who worked in the newspaper industry for decades, I never thought I’d see the day when I would have no interest in reading a newspaper. I read the comics online and watch the evening news to get a brief overview of what happened today. If I want more detail, I’ll google it online. It’s kinda sad to see the demise of newspapers, but….the world changes.
My local newspaper has already effectively disappeared as it contains so little actual news and local sports that it has become nothing more than a glorified shopper’s guide.
Well, the newspapers don’t have much of a business case anymore. In thirty years I seldom saw a newspaper article that got the facts right in cases where I actually knew the facts.
Newspapers did it to themselves. They stopped being "news"papers and became propaganda organs with the “news” carefully selected and worded to benefit one political side. Kind of hard to survive when you alienate 50% or more of your potential audience and 30% or more of the side you are pandering to doesn’t bother to keep up with news.
I used to read the papers up until 2005 but then they started to have less pages then they got smaller and then they took most of the comics I read out of the paper because they took a survey and said that these certain comics weren’t being read. Now it’s the internet and local network news for me.
When I need to absorb cooking grease, I spread a layer of newspaper with one clean paper towel on top. When I run out of newspaper for this purpose, I spend $0.50 on the hometown weekly. Quite useful!
Our local paper used to be an afternoon – child carrier delivered paper. First they went to adult carriers, then am delivery by “flip delivery” – meaning they drive by the house and throw it at the driveway. I complained to the publisher and told him “The newspaper is made into garbage by the delivery. My mother told me not to ever pick up anything that is on the ground as it garbage.” I get mine in a tube next to my house.
There was a huge scandal about a decade or a little more ago of them inflating their circulation and most advertisers pulling out. At the same time the paper started to shrink as a result of the less ads and less money to put out the paper – so circulation dropped. I still get it delivered, but with a special price deal, and my husband sits and it looks at it and cannot believe how small it is – the business “section” is one 4 page paper. They charge extra for special editions. What is a special edition? Thanksgiving due to the ads, the two annual local events books – 90% ads, and such.
Several years ago they raised the price. Since we are on a limited budget and I am the only one who reads it – I canceled it. I got a call from the head of circulation – you have been with us for so long, etc, why are you leaving? I told her, she cut the price back to what it was it for me. Every time they raise the price – I call her and she cuts it back, but since I am paying less, I don’t get the special editions.

They would disappear, just like Saturday morning cartoons on TV did.

They will both still be sitting there with their coffee and on their electronic devices just the same as I see in any restaurant.

There is nothing holy about paper… newspapers mission is to provide factual information for the good of the public (or should be, anyway)

Maybe it’s just me, but my first thought was that they’d still be in bed, ‘snuggling’.

We wouldn’t have pink bag advertising thrown on our driveways for one thing!

TV chefs have also had years of soux chef experience. I doubt Ben has those kind of skills.
