The classic concept of masculinity is overrated. In the days when you had to go out and kill your own sabertooth tiger for food, or fight off an entire tribe of howling wolves to protect your family, there may have been some need for it. Today, I’d rather have some feelings.
Macho men talk about their feelings all the time. What people usually mean when they say “you should talk about your feelings” is that you should talk specifically about your feelings of vulnerability. Which is a fair enough idea, of course.
Every time I try to talk about my feelings or sit someone down for a hard talk about reality, it almost always ends with them not just blowing off everything I have to say but also them getting heavily offended and playing some sort of card that they think will let them off the hook.
In contrast, unless I’m displaying some visible sign of distress, most people presume that I’m just fine and get mad when I try to tell them I’m not.
Cue me muddling along through life with a spine so messed up I should literally be unable to walk and people wondering why I’m upset about it.
