The football coach should not be the highest paid employee at any university. Student athletes should be students first – going to REAL classes and getting a REAL education. Student athletes should be able to choose which brands they wear rather than be moving billboards and they should NOT be prevented from using tape for support that covers a logo. The ridiculous amount of money that the NCAA makes should be distributed to the schools, again for actual education, not a new stadium.
This makes me both sad: I wish that college sports were mostly for the athletes and it wasn’t all about money… and it makes me happy that somebody has finally got their head up out of the NCAA wishful thinking and realized that college football at least is actually a major profit center for universities and that NCAA rules make the athletes effectively slaves on that farm.
Well, there is scholarship money, where the NCAA has ignored the fact for years that these guys do get degrees, and rarely show up for any classes. But there’s also the slave labor aspect as far as the cash the colleges and NCAA pocket.
What the entire country needs (not just California) is for all colleges and universities to go back to the original purpose of collegiate athletics, which was to provide the student body with some type of physical exercise in which ALL could participate.
Barring THAT we need to remove ALL FINANCIAL CONNECTIONS between the educational institution and the athletic institution.
And this we could actually legislate on the federal level, by tying it to reception of federal funds.

The PAC-12 will reign again, USC, Cal, UCLA and Stanford forever – RAH! (Until the SEC decides it needs to play the same game)

What is it about “amateur sports” that Governor Newsom does not understand?

More investment is needed for women’s athletics.

Oh yes, there’s also the fact that in all but about two states, the highest paid public employees are coaches, mostly football.

You mean, the agents will make money, probably more money than the athletes., don’t you?
