Not to nitpick a strip I dearly love; but if it’s 1941 and the characters are in Eastern Europe you bet your life they know what a swastika meant at that time. Particularly since they’re gypsies, who besides Jews and homosexuals, were at the top of the list for extermination,
Hmm… I realize for the first time that a big component of the original site never came through (because—and this embarrassing—I forgot about it). On the original site, I tracked different locations they were visiting through the “tags” and the highlight text. It was more apparent they were deep in the woods of Siberia, then Russia, sort of criss crossing over in the adventures, which began much more randomly, and making their way further and further west. In comment threads and whatnot magic attributed to some of the speed of the travels, with folks wondering if Olwen was using portals, etc, and it was never really made clear, but that bit seemed fun. They’re coming further and further west in the comic, and they have stuck mostly to small towns (I used to have a lot of the actual towns, I think one comes up in a mini-Christmas special possibly!) As they came closer to the west, this began to pop up…
And it was all very, very loose too! Swan Eaters had a lot less structure in the first half, and then I had regrets once I began to nail down real plots… so this still has a lot wrong with it, (are they teleporting? Are they portal hopping? Etc) but I thought I’d try to include that aspect the long time readers had in their first run!
I think everyone is missing that Salem saw it and not her grandmother. I am not sure she would know what it means especally before 1942 when it became as infamous it is. Her family seems to show little interest in the outside world. They know about Stalin and the Revolution becuase it directly effected them.

By 1941 a lot of people were very familiar with that symbol. Although Clover doesn’t get out much.

1938 or early 1939 would be a better choice for the year. By 1941 most of the world knew what was already going terribly wrong.
