    The loss of communication skills can be attributed to laziness. So many people don’t know the difference between your and you’re and often misspell the second one but that is to be expected when they pronounce both of them “yer”.

    I have a whole rant about icons versus words.

    How long does it take to become a reader if your language uses an alphabet or syllabary? Answer: About a year of training to become a reader, then perhaps 2 more to become facile; because there are perhaps as many as 100 symbols to memorize. But if your language uses ideographs, it you must memorize (at least) 1000 symbols to be able to cope with basic language, then every new concept is a whole new symbol (sometimes slightly related).

    And the key insight: Ideographs are icons
