This is an issue which has been ignored by Dems and Repubs both for too long. This is an issue which I would think all Americans would support, providing veterans with adequate support after they are discharged. How foolish I am.
Many police departments are actively recruiting veterans to become officers. Their assumption is that the soldiers are already trained, but they are trained for war not to “serve and protect” a civilian society. Considering this and PTSD, you can see some of the causes for increased police shootings.
A lot of blame can be laid at the feet of recruiters. Young people who join thinking it’s the Scouts or some sort of sports team experience get a rude awakening fast and then you’re committed. And it doesn’t take long for them to realize that the death, pain, and suffering are largely for nothing. And when they come home they realize that no one really cares. Then they get a job as a cop………
My son served 20 years as a Navy Officer, including 12 years with the 3rd special warfare group out of Coronado Island. Shortly before he retired, he told me: “Father, if you knew some of the things I have done, you would never speak to me again.” He killed himself August 11, 2019. I talked to a Navy reserve Chaplain about counseling for me, as part of the family of this veteran. He told me the Navy had nothing. He said there was lots of talk from higher command about the problem, but nothing is the result.

It is not just what they’ve been through, it is also the lack of active support for them. Proper planning would help.

Soldiers have to give several warnings before shooting, perhaps the police should do the same.
