Fritz: Seeing the potential in Van Buren, I put him on a strict makeover regimen! With diet and exercise, I broke him of his need for food, and even improved his rotten attitude! We were ready to unveil his healthy, positive attitude on the world... Cat: I love Mondays!! Fritz: ... when fate intervened! Cat: Uh, have you seen this new strip, "Garfield"? Fritz: A fat, mean comic strip cat? Ha! It'll never last...

Garfield was created with the intention of selling merchandise and becoming a cash cow for Davis. People finding it funny is just a bonus.

Reminds me of Richard Dawson talking about Newkirk’s accent on Hogan’s Heroes. Dawson said in an interview late in life that he wanted to do Newkirk with a Liverpool, or Scouse, accent. The producers nixed the idea because they thought no American would go for the Scouse accent and he relented. Then shortly afterward he was going by a theater where the line was wrapped around the corner with teens waiting to see a rather popular movie. Can’t remember if Dawson said the movie was A Hard Days Night or Help!, but in either case he went back to the producers and pointed out the fact that the Beatles mvie very heavily featured the accent they thought no American would go for.
