The “foreign” manufacturers, just like Boeing, went to the south where COL was low, as were wages, and they could dump the unions by offering less than the union workers elsewhere got more pay and better benefits. Modern day cotton pickers. BTW, robots are still taking more jobs in the industry.
I wonder if Pain has ever considered looking back to the early 1900’s and forward to note how many in his family line benefited from the increased wages, education opportunities, health care, and more. Then compared that to what was considered standard life prior to the advent of unions. Naw, I bet he just keeps his head where the sun has never shined.
People should be free to join, or not join, a union. I wouldn’t join since about 70% of my wages would go to electing politicians whose goal is to destroy the American economy and turn us in to a socialist hellhole.
Unions are not always the best fit for a company or even a particular industry. Maybe it made more sense for GM to be a union shop in the past, but less so now?
Joe Biden was here in Boston a few months ago to support striking workers from Stop & Shop (on a side note, he just referred to that as the time he was in Boston to walk a picket line with Rite Aid worker – time to bow out, Joe). Grocery stores are a necessity but the margins are tiny and the competition is tough. Stop & Shop used to be dominant around here and was a good store with a great selection and good prices. Market Basket has been expanding in recent years and has taken business away from the competition, S&S more than any of the others. Why? Better prices and service. Market Basket also pays it’s employees better, has great benefits and tremendous employee loyalty. S&S has higher prices, meh service and high turnover. One is a family-owned, non-union company and the other is a traditional corporation which is unionized. S&S will be closing stores in this area soon while MB continues to add stores. The unionization of Stop & Shop marked the start of their slide. Unionization is not a good fit for that particular industry, imo.
Labor Unions (as opposed to Craft Unions) share responsibility in their own decline. As an active member of the Steelworkers Union in the ’70s I saw how for unions both customers and the company were viewed as the enemy. The attitude of both Union and Mngt helped keep blue collar wages flat for 40 years. However, today the scale is tilted so far over to the corporations that unions are needed and strikes may be the only true power left to get any fairness.
Unions should be abolished to MAGA. Okay, so there might be a few itty-bitty accidents like the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, or kids under 12 working 80 hour work weeks in hazardous factories, and all those pesky OSHA regulations repealed. . . . But we were great in those days, remember? /s
Those wanting to get rid of unions.. forget.. that unions set the bar for all those white collar / professional non union jobs as well.. And thus.. you have the middle class losing ground.
I remember when U.S. auto manufacturers were advertising for people to “BUY AMERICAN” while they were having car parts built in other countries and having much of the assembly work done elsewhere.
Yeah cause Americans should applaud a cheap labor force that ensures the Executives and stock shareholders continue to be millionaires and billionaires at their expense.
The Unions are weaker than they’ve ever been, and the US lags FAR behind the rest of the world. When we had strong unions, we had a stronger nation and MORE technological innovation.

I’m sure Payne’s ecstatic to draw not one but two cars. Aside from that, he’s paid to be anti-union, so this is spot on.

Tesla and BMW are moving production out of the USA and to China because of Trump’s tariffs.

I personally don’t rank “production” as a higher priority than “employee’s rights”… so I don’t have a problem with this.

Hey Henry, if you think there’s a problem there, surely your hero Trump can fix it… faster than a speeding Formula 1.
(And the low Mexican wages will pay for it.)
