    “The Immediate Goodness of Grampa”

Nelson, one day he will take you to that zoo and protect you from everything that threatens to darken or diminish your life or joy. That zoo trip may take longer than you would like—but it will happen.

Nelson’s parents look more athletic. Is Earl really the best person to bring there?

My dad promised to take me to the zoo when I was 12.

Forty-two years later, I’m still waiting.

Had to look up who McKay is: he — like Henry B. Eyring a few strips ago — is a General Authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (he’s in one of the Quorums of the Seventy) of which “Pickles” author Brian Crane and myself are members. (What did McKay originally say anyway, Lee Cox and other Latter-day Saint GoComics users?)

Einstein said that 5 minutes sitting on a hot stove is a lot  longer than 5 minutes spent kissing your lover.

Or, consider this: 30 days for Nelson is about 1% of his life. But for Earl, 1% of his life is maybe 9 or so months. I’m pretty sure that our experience of time is at least partly about how many memories we already have.

I asked my father once why he never took me to the zoo, he said “if they want you, they’ll come and get you”.

How long “just a minute” is depends on which side of the bathroom door you’re on.

Not sure why Earl is waiting, especially for something like this. No better time than the present.

I still remember my first trip to the Zoo. I had nightmares that night about bears eating me.

My 6 year old said this to me last night actually. He said “dad, can you come read me this book?” I was in the middle of using the bathroom at the time. I said “in a minute buddy.” My 6 year old then said, “Your minutes will put me to sleep dad!!!!!”

When I was a boy, Disneyland opened in California. Oh, how I wanted to go to Disneyland. I asked my father, who said we’d have to see. But the Magic Kingdom was clear across the American continent from where we lived. So we never quite made it. On one of our last outings together, to a baseball game on Father’s Day (as baseball was on of my father’s great passions), if I remember aright, Dad mentioned that childhood request of mine and apologized that we never made that trip. Since I was grown by then, we both had a good laugh, and enjoyed the game. He died a few months later. I am old myself now, and yet I still think my father died too soon. And that’s the point, I guess. Soon means a lot of things.

I live in a small community coastal GA, next to a Mormon church. They just lost a member who was an outstanding person in our community. Go with God, as I know you will, Capt Don!
