When I taught high school students, if I started a comment with “That’s an interesting idea….” or any variation thereof, they’d say, “You hate it, don’t you?”
Attention spans have grown considerably shorter over the last 40 years…. and has been documented in several journals. Linear focus as well has been diminished due to the increasingly divergent and more abundant sources of background stimuli in day-to-day life.
I sometimes try to remember and “re-enact” the pre-80s lack of hyper-stimulation mindset in myself… .but truth be told…. it is awfully damn hard. We have all had our wiring reconfigured. Perhaps the new configuration may be evolutionairily stablizing…. perhaps it will lead to our demise.
