She doesn’t want to see the really efficient algorithms.

I have no idea how this works. And I don’t want to. What a waste of time and effort!

That’s how I learned, not sure what the algorithms are?

It does seem like they are adding extra steps and creating more room for errors for students who have trouble making columns of numbers, (of which I was and remain a charter member) but I can understand how they are teaching multiplication as shown in this strip. I think the old way was more efficient, but I can see this possibly being easier for those who have trouble with math, which I never did.

I can’t add 1 + 1 and get an answer. All the numbers I use are in the .0001 ranges. Sisters husband was one of those math savants that could give you an answer before you plugged it all the way into the calculator. Just for kicks I gave him a multiplication problem of a couple million x a couple 100ks and he had it correct in under 10 seconds.

Common Core is the worst thing to hit education since organized school sports.

it is the old way that we learned but you don’t have to worry about columns if you do it right. But, it is just another way that will be difficult for some and easy for others. I have seen grandchildren get right answers while the parents were carrying on about it being stupid and impossible.

FWIW this always worked for me when i was without a calculator or the means to write (I rarely carry pen or paper with me anymore.) You all are probably well versed in the “New Math” way of doing things, which left your own parents confounded. Some things never change, and older folks always kvetch about the way kids are taught today.

Here’s a song about it, so you know I’m not just making it up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6OaYPVueW4
