(when I was married) our daugher was throwing a tantrum, lying on the kitchen floor and yelling and hitting the floor with her fists. I said “Just a minute Tiffanie, you’ll hurt yourself. Here, get on this.” And I put a throw rug on the floor beside her. She stopped her tantrum completely, got on the rug, and started back the tantrum.

When my kids had tantrums, I would stand back and give them scores.
“I give it a six. I didn’t really get the pure TORTURE of your situation. Put more emotion into it next time.”
That confused them.
