They can’t spell “science”.

I had to look up “sulphur” in the last comic.

When I was in class I had trouble pronouncing some words, like “operationalization,” and “molybdenum.”

Well in third and 4th year psychology operationalization was used over and over, who knows why.

And molybdenum is a metallic element added to steel to give strength and rust resistance.

That would have been me, about 45 years ago! If he were preparing the civics report on his laptap or desktop computer,as most would do today, Spellcheck would take care of his problem! The cartoon is waaaaaay behind the times!

Those -ines & -ums say something about the properties of the chemicals & metals, which you don’t need to know if you don’t need to spell molybdenum.

Most developed countries keep the kids in class more hours for more days. We pile on homework, for them to do in that horrid environment we blame for their failings.

You got that right. Actually what drove me crazy was the way I made a living half my life. I was in the sign business, and I don’t mean those little things you stick in the yard saying “Garage Sale.”

Hmm, spent many years designing interpretive signs, working with the “sign makers”– the objective was always to get the “message” across to the public in a way they could understand the material. It became more difficult, and limited to “graphics”, as literacy declined, regarding all subjects, and areas of “thought”.

Can you spell “Sports Jock”?

DrCanuck, what was the reason for the emphasis on operationalization?

We did an experiment that had to be one of the stupidest of all time. Volunteers came to a waiting room where we had put up a false wall and a two way mirror. They were told to wait and someone would tell them about the experiment. But that WAS the experiment. The volunteers waited, until some just left, some fidgeted, but most said, “Hey, that’s a two way mirror!”

I found that I liked making things, and painting, more than hanging around an office.
