Seems to me that this cartoon is an ironic take on the distinction between proportion and percentage in support of the women’s team. 100% of nothing is nothing, so the carping comments confound me.
In the US, the women’s team is more successful and brings in more revenue so should be paid more. This is not about the rest of the world. When I was growing up in the UK, girls were not allowed to play football competitively. It was netball or nothing.
So, what M’Lester is saying is that the US mens team, who didn’t even play, got 9% of $4 billion, while the US women, who not only DID play, but also WON got 13% of $73 million.
And he presents this as evidence of fairness and equality due to the so called “Free Market”?
And, just in case you haven’t worked it out yourself yet:
$4,000,000,000 × .09 = $360,000,000
While
$73,000,000 × .13 = $9,490,000
And that’s then divided up among the team, coaches and so on, right?

So what you are saying then is that ALL the women, ALL over the world are being cheated, not just the US Team? Ok, I get that, you are right. And you blame that on the Free Market? Sorry, dude, I think it’s evidence of a world wide problem, not just an American problem.

The purpose of the team has more important elements than making money.
Lester, NYT and Forbes conveniently limit the revenues information to the World Cup. There are many more games played by the U.S. teams and the women’s revenues are greater overall.

Our women’s soccer team have no class any way you look at it. Bad sports, tedious Trump-haters, ungracious, and greedy… like a lot of pro athletes male and female… but not appealing. Look at the great Connecticut women’s basketball teams: Great people all around — terrific athletes, hugely successful and gracious winners.
Gotta go with Mike on this one. I don’t know how to make the women’s team generate more revenue which is the only thing that could bring their pay up to equity with the men’s team. There are just not enough people willing to pay to see women play. Reality bites.
I think the only thing this proves is that Lester isn’t good at math and shouldn’t attempt it… and that he’s not good at logic, and should probably get help. Dude: The US women’s team gets paid by the US Soccer Federation. Which does in fact get some of its money from FIFA. They are distinct organizations which you have blatantly attempted to confuse your readers about. Shame.
Mikey is being disingenuous. These number are for the world. I don’t care what the rest of the world is doing. By many accounts the US women’s team is on par for revenue generated. Pay US women what the US men get paid.
