Mike complains about newspapers discontinuing editorial cartoons while expecting to be paid for half-“axed” work consisting of tired old cliches, worn out memes, and minimal art. Maybe if he upped his game and actually created something people would want to run with, he’d have a leg to stand on.
There were (at least) two cartoonists fired for anti-Trump cartoons. Our own Rob Rogers, and Canadian Michael de Adder. I’m sure there are others that didn’t make the news.
The U.S. is a capitalist society (except for those pesky socialist concepts which have crept in). Editorial cartoonists are subject to the same market forces as all workers.
On a slightly related note, I wonder when the Antifa crowd is going to catch on to the eventual reaction of folk to those “milkshakes” laced with concrete and even nastier additives?
Sooner or later, they’re going to run into a legally armed citizen who perceives that shake-about-to-be-tossed as a lethal threat.
Here’s hoping that the Antifa crowd considers a bullet or two as a fair trade for assaulting someone with that “milkshake”.
A heads up to the Antifa thugs standing behind the person with the “milkshake”. (Not that they believe in God…) Pray that that armed citizen is using hollow points. Hollow points have less of a tendency to travel through the body and strike targets behind the original threat.
(Normally, a legally armed citizen would not shoot at even a lethal threat if there are people behind the target, however, if the target is in a crowd of potential threats [ie. violent Antifa protesters], that might justify taking the shot. Just saying.)
This cartoon is opaque to those not inculcated in the right wing memes and nonsense that Mike uses in place of fact and reasoned opinion. Who is on the pedestal? Mike himself?
Is this about the statues of pro-slavery traitors like Lee? Is Mike suggesting he is a heroic figure of a failed attempt to preserve slavery?
Then the mob must be the patriots who want to tear down the statues, not the slavery supporters who want them left in the public square.
This toon is especially lame because it’s essentially incomprehensible.
Editorial cartoonist used to be able to make a point and even if it was not one that everyone agreed with, the reaction was a reasoned, “oh well, I don’t agree but whatever…maybe the next one will be better” or something bordering on civilized. But reading the hyper-partisan vitriolic reactions that editorial cartoons drag out of people’s worst nature (seen on this site daily!), it’s understandable why outlets are dropping them. The personal attacks on the artists themselves is particularly absurd and uncivil. People ruin everything.
Yes Yes Mike J Western Democracy is on its last legs because of a very small group of protesters throwing milkshakes.
The Neo Nazis KKK thugs have nothing to do with it.Vladimir Putin’s unholy alliance with the not really democratic elected impostor in the white house has nothing to do with it.Putin saying that western Liberalism ( Enlightenment style Life Liberty Property protections) have nothing to do with it.
Trump defying the supreme court has nothing to do with it
Fox news ginning up hatred towards honest civil servants like Robert Mueller have noting to do with it.

Who is the mob supposed to even be?
Is that a MAGA crowd, mobbing the media at Trump’s beck and call?
Is that Antifa? Calling the media the enemy of the people?
Is that an editorial staff, making editorial decisions with which Mike disagrees?
Is that the average editorial comic reader, finally disgusted with the hypocrisy displayed by too many op-ed cartoonists?
As @Patjade said above, time to up your game, Mikey-boy.

Hateful, empty declarative right-wing cartoons are not as popular as they used to be.

Excellent comic, Mike. Please keep it up.

The liberal media will eventually get rid of all of those that oppose it’s agenda. Welcome to the Socialist Republic.

Hang in there Mr. Lester. My best wishes.

It’s easy to see whose ox is being gored by newspapers’ decisions to cut political cartoonists. I suspect Lester’s on the, ahem, cutting edge of this…
