Maybe not the best timing. This is wildfire season; two are burning near us now. Neither one is threatening our home but the one north of Flagstaff is threatening homes. Ya know, when we lived in Phoenix we didn’t give wildfire season a thought.

I do believe fire was around longer than you so fire found you and you used it.

The good news is that your cave didn’t burn down.

I suppose discovering fire and learning to control it was quite a few centuries apart.

Actually, fire was never “discovered”. It came from nature. What was discovered was how to make fire.

The lesson we got on fires was not in a forest … let a fire start in drought conditions, mix in dry grasses and wind and one gets a rapidly moving fire. The fire was close to 100 miles away and brought in smoke so thick that one smelled like smoke in less than 5 minutes – horrible for those with normal lung function, dangerous for those with lung issues. OY!

When the Europeans first came to the east coast of what is now the United States, they found park-like settings where the Indians burned the underbrush under the trees to keep it clear.
