I still have very fond memories of those lazy nostalgic late evenings at our old local drive in theater. I Remember getting the speaker off the post and hanging it on the inside of the car window and turning the knob to get the volume just right. Sadly they are all gone now and only a very few are still in existence. I recall one winter where they would rent you a small gas heater to set in your car to stay warmwhile you watched the movie.. I don’t know the reason they didn’t carbon monoxide you, but it worked great at the time they had them.
I worked concessions at a drive in theater in 1972. It was located next to what is now interstate I355. After midnight they showed X-rated films. So distracted drivers is not a new thing.
I just discovered that a drive-in 30 miles away closed permanently in April – I hadn’t even known it was there, or I’d have “frequented” it…infrequently.
I miss those.. I remember one time, my BFF and I couldn’t get a babysitter for her toddlers, so we bundled them into the back seat in their jammies. First movie was fine, they fell asleep.
Then… “Heavy Metal” comes on… sure enough, a little voice from the back pipes up “What’s that??” LOL!
Funniest thing, I mentioned it to that little piper (who is now a grown man) he said “Oh THAT’S where I first saw Heavy Metal!”
Are there even any Drive In movies left? Used to be every place had them. There were even Drive In churches, Groceries, wedding chapels-can’t think of any more. Oh yes, Drive In Funerals.
We had the Skyway Twin drive-in theater. On Friday, Saturday and Monday they would show the first feature again after the second. I would go watch two movies at one screen and then over to the other screen to watch another. Before it closed in the early 1980’s it went the way of using the car radio to hear the movie. They had one row with speakers for those whose radio didn’t work. On the way to the movie I would pick up some snacks and fried chicken to eat while enjoying the movie. But I still bought the theaters popcorn! I remember once when I got glasses, I took them off at the movie and realized not having glasses was why i hadn’t enjoyed the movies in a while.
I can’t imagine any drive-in showing X-rated movies unless the screen wasn’t visible outside of the theater.

Sadly, after marriage, I remember we witnessed a mid-air, small plane collision overhead! Flames, debris and lots of screams that night! It really was horrendous to watch! One plane was owned by a locally, well known car dealer. Over L.A. area, 1953 or 55

Yes I loved the drive in movies. Even lost my male virginity at one in Bucyrus Ohio while in my 1955 Ford convertible!!
