When I first moved to Spain, elementary school started in October. In those days air conditioning was unknown outside cinemas and the bigger stores. Now it starts in September, because fewer people go away for the whole summer. Parents are campaigning to get air conditioning in the classrooms because even in September it can be pretty hot.
Charles Schulz was from Minnesota, and it’s been a long tradition here that school always started after Labor Day… it’s only recently that some schools have start dates ahead of Labor Day… :-)
