It’s his own fault – all he does is loaf around.

If you’re right out of the oven, and home or bakery bread, you are still #1 in my book!

There was an episode of a Canadian t.v. detective series called Murdoch Mysteries, set in the early 1900s, where one of the characters is wishing it were possible to buy bread already sliced.

“I always make a mess of slicing bread. If they sold it already sliced, it would be the best thing since… well, I don’t know what.”

As a child I was fascinated at the bread slicing machine at the bakery.

Sliced bread was first introduced in 1928 by Otto Frederick Rohwedder from Davenport, Iowa, who invented the first loaf-at-a-time bread slicing machine. However, the first record of the idiom is thought to be in 1952, where the famous comedian Red Skelton said in an interview with the Salisbury Times: “Don’t worry about television. It’s the greatest thing since sliced bread”.
