No pie for me: I like baked apples. I like thin flaky pastry. I don’t like cooked fruit getting my pastry soggy, and I don’t like crumbs in my baked apples. (I identify with Petey in “Cul de Sac”)
When my oldest was in 6th or 7th grade (He’s 27 now), they were made to keep a journal, to build their self esteem and emotional well being… … … Anyway, he got in trouble one week. All of the entries in hie journal were, “I like pie.” What is amazing is, he’s a well adjusted, hard working young man, without all of the “triggering” snowflake attributes of many of his peers, whom he mostly has little regard for.
We had apple and pear pies when we were stationed in Belgium, and my mom was always making pies. However, now, I have to make my own Rhubarb pie(I am the only one in the household that likes it), and I usually only make it for MY birthday and around Christmas. Of course, I do not tell my grandchildren when I make MY pies, therefore, I do not have to fight them, to get a piece of MY pies.
I LOVE Pie! First job out of home, I was 19 worked a restaurant that featured lots of different types of pie. For four years I had pie every working day sometimes twice a day and got to take some home too! Never got tired of it.
we have a weeping red mulberry by our front walk. my mom used to make strawberry-mulberry pie. she would put a clean sheet on the ground and shake the branches so the ripe fruit would fall. she taught me how to make pie and my husband claims that was the main reason he married me was for my cherry pie!
I was just thinking and missing the Stones! July 26, 2020 (the last date of the strip) seems so looooooong ago! Would they be going stir crazy like so many of us? Would grandma Evie and Arnold have been stranded due to covid while traveling to some far-off land?
Ahhh maybe they are living the life we will get back to!

Did Val and Joan even have ice cream with their mother’s pies? Within their parents’ means, it was possible.

Also at that time fresh produce cost less than processed foods, not like it is now.
it was less expensive to make food from scratch than it was to buy pre-made food.

Question: What is your favorite type of pie? I’m partial to a certain type of sweet potato pie. It uses sweetened condensed milk in the recipe.

There is no better way to say “I love you” than to cook for someone.

Wished I could have a crusted flour pie, we at times use wheat flour, butter or shortening I cannot have. If I had a better metabolism then I could.

Has anyone read this backstory before? Where did Val and Joan grow up and why were they so poor? They’re Boomers, not from the Depression, right?
