must be really desperate – it would have been easier to run across the grass lawn or edge strips.

We had a gravel driveway, so I had to run across hot gravel—both ways!

Next time bring flipflops, Red. Or stay on the grass. Enjoy your treat.

During my shoeless childhood I could leave footprints in melted bitumen (asphalt to some). I could also leave handprints because of the callouses on my hands from work I had to do. They were not ‘the good old days’.

We used to pop the tar bubbles in asphalt with our toes.

I remember the hot pavement at the pool….and running to get money for the ice cream truck stopping in front of the house….yummy! Memories are made of this.

My sister chased an ice cream truck barefoot an unknown distance one summer. Had second degree burns on the soles of her feet. Needless to say she never chased another without shoes on…

That’s nice to share your red pop with Rover, Red. Even if it’s unknowingly!

Why don’t they run on the grass instead of the sidewalk?

I’m with everyone else. Grass to run on right there Red (actually left there is a better bet), if not for you then for Rover’s sensitive paws. PLUS, it looks like you are sitting on the curb with your feet in the street at the start….Mr. Basset is usually better at internal logic than this. And yes, it’s a comic (I refuse to say JUST a comic), but are smart and funny and I will suspend my disbelief unless something glaring gets in the way.

All that said, I do truly love this comic and the bond between Red and Rover. I’m gonna go get a popsicle today!

And yet we continue to cover our roads and highways with hotter-than-blazes asphalt (which is also a petroleum product). I remember the days of Red’s childhood when all streets were cement – hot but not enough to peel your skin off!
