Tobacco companies aren’t just doing tobacco now. And like big pharma, they’re hot for legalization of cannabis profits they can put in a bank, or copyright, or both. Big money to be made indeed.
‘Sugar’ taxes are alrady being charged on oversized’ sodas in some cities. What next, extra taxes on ‘supersized’ fast food meals? What about all-you-can eat buffet lines, overly large candy bars/donuts, etc.? These all can have negative health implications, as can most things done to excess.
They are still doing it now but failing- the soda tax in philly. it’s a no win situation. I F people don’t drink the soda then they get healthy but no income is generated. If they count on the income then the ‘health’ aspect has failed. AND when i found myself waiting for a train or something, I’m more likely to order a hard drink than soft.
A reporter once asked Mayor Ed Koch of NYC if he was worried about tobacco lobbyists bribing the City Council not to tax cigarettes. He said “No. They will take the bribe money and raise taxes anyway.”
