I have a Long Term Care policy for such things, this is America where if you don’t have money, you die, best system in the world, ask any Conservative. Last year Americans borrowed 88 Billion for healthcare, best system in the world, ask any bank or insurance company!!
If you’re poor Medicaid (in NY) is actually quite good but this country needs single payer. There’s a lot of money being bet against that, but we can hope that someday the will of the people will prevail.
if she turns all her assets over to you now, in 7 years when they check to see whether she has any assets, she will be eligible to get very good care in a medicaid assisted living place. best begin to shop them now.
“assisted living” “palliative care” “memory care” - these are all different regimens, not jargon or euphemisms. What you need is a case worker who can look at your mom’s big picture of needs (including translation). Or you need to move out of the US to get your needs met. :(
even home care with a home care provider is beyond most people’s Financial capabilities… When I started taking care of my mom who had Alzheimer’s or lewys bodies or some senile dementia thing they were never sure ….at any rate when I started taking care of my mom California had ceased paying relatives for home care of elderly patients… It didn’t stop me but it sure made it difficult… And that’s the way it is for most people who are not rich or even middle income… The pain that’s felt by the patients and their caretakers is horrendous… And we have an Administration that wants to take away all health care for the elderly and that includes Home Care, private home care, in hospice care etc etc etc. It’s a wonder that most home care providers do not end up basket cases like their elderly patients. The guilt that they feel for not being able to absolutely fix the problem, the guilt that they feel when the disease causes the death of their patient… That guilt can ride with them for the rest of their lives.
I went through with my mom and dementia. Medicaid was approved just as my mom ran out of money to pay her rent for assisted living. The previous month her doctor was able to recommend a nursing home that had room and took care of all her paperwork. We moved her at the end of that month. A great doctor and place that is practically a hospital. The assisted living facility tried to claim we needed two months notice and tried to squeeze another month out of her, but she had no money, so…
We went through exactly the same thing with my mom…. No dementia, but it got put on her record somehow and no-one could correct that. She broke her hip and had the same useless care followed by euphemism city.
She passed last month, less than a year after the broken hip.
Dear Ted Rall, I am not a usual commenter. My father was a veteran of WWII, a pioneer in computer work and he died from Alzheimer’s in a decent Vet hospital and it was a tragic, exhausting experience. I deeply appreciate your work. It causes cleansing tears.

If you’re less than a mega-billionaire in the U.S., don’t get sick and don’t get old.

Republicans want to destroy the system even further.

It seems odd to me that older people, many who have had to deal with aging parents with dementia, still support Republicans.

Why doesn’t he let his mother stay with him? What do you think happens with old people in poor countries? They stay with their children.

There is a woman who took a room on a cruise ship because it was cheaper than elder care — and certainly more enjoyable.

I went through this with my mom. I had to threaten to sue the state of Texas to get them to spend federal money on her.

I live in mounting dread of the day I grow old and unemployable. This country does NOT look after its elderly and infirm.
