“Be what you’re like. Be like yourself.”

It’s a lot like whistling in the dark.

Shelter dogs are the best! Adopt Don’t Shop.My Foster the Wonder Dog, who I rescued, fostered and finally adopted, ended up rescuing me. Shelter dogs know that you saved their lives and are grateful to you and SHOW you every day. I am a proud Foster Fail*. :))

*(That being said I am no longer allowed to foster, bring home strays or look at any picture of any animal that may need a home anymore. The husband has reached his limit of fur in the house lol!)

Oh, right in the feels… Annie is such a sweet girl. If I had unlimited funds I would have a huge property and operate a foster sanctuary so that I could foster doggos and meowzers as, well, not my job, more like as a life mission.

I have always had rescue dogs and cats. They are so sweet and loving. Would never do it any other way. I always wished I had the resources to open an “old folks home” for old unwanted pets to live out their golden years in peace.

One of the cardiologists in my old office would write the address of the local shelter on a prescription pad and give it to his patients. “Adopt a dog. You’ll save him life, and he’ll save yours.” I loved that man!

Maverick (background of the profile pic) was a shelter cat. Ember (She Who Must Be Given Attention, hence her being in the foreground) was a feral kitten who was nurtured along for four months by a rescue agency before being in the right place at the right time during an adoption event at Petsmart. They also have an older brother, Kitty (my then-PreK son named him) who was also a feral rescue and now lives with my MIL.

Today a shelter dog, tomorrow a foster fail.

I understand the sentiment (and I have a rescue dog) but I’m thinking most people don’t really think that way? It might be they are just looking for a specific breed and most shelters don’t have any of what they’re looking for.

If you think of shelter animals as “used” or somehow deficient, you probably should rethink having pets. I was fostering a mama cat and her five kittens when a neighbor expressed interest, but made it clear she did not want the mama cat (who was only 7 months old!) because she didn’t want a “damaged” cat. As you can probably guess, she was not allowed to adopt any of ours.

The shelters in my area won’t let me adopt a dog because I live in an apartment and don’t have a fenced yard. I can’t get a cat as I have trouble with the dust from cat litter.
