In some other C&H one-on-none baseball game, Calvin pitches the ball, gets a pop-fly, quickly switches to the glove and calls himself out. “Darn,” he says in the final panel after switching back to the bat.
On the positive side, Calvin, you have a no-hitter going. Remember, in baseball, the ball is controlled by the defense, not the offense. I think cricket, lovely cricket is the only other sport where that’s the case.
This reminds me of the fictitious skating maneuver called the “Pamchenko” in the movie The Cutting Edge. To bypass all the schmaltz preceeding the actual throw, scroll to 1:39 seconds in this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmbXanCiB-U. And by the way, I’m a skater and this move is impossible. LOL.

Your batting average sucks, but your ERA is pretty good.

Could be that the infield fly rule was in effect, in which case Calvin’s out regardless if he catches it or not

From a later strip:
Calvin: I’ve lost my marbles.
Hobbes: People have been saying that for years.
Calvin: Really? Well, I hope someone finds them.

And so Calvin learns a hard lesson about life… You do your best and you can still fail due to unforeseen circumstances.
