i think that Chip is advocating cutting social security payments to us oldsters under the guise of helping college students, but really and magically the benefits will go the the deserving 1%.
This is the topic that makes me really dislike Republicans. Social Security is one of our greatest accomplishments as a nation. We have taken a large step in lessening the poverty of the elderly because of the program. And they want to get rid of it or privatize it to some degree. Unbelievable.
And it would not be that difficult to fix. Some combination of the following would do it; raise the Social Security tax rate a SMALL amount, raise the maximum amount of income that pays Social Security tax, raise the full retirement age a little. And there are other small fixes that would help stabilize the program.
Those retirees collecting SS have earned every cent they’re getting. If a student was scammed by a for-profit institution and incurred substantial debt for basically nothing in return, we should be helping them. If a student incurred a bunch of debt because they chose to go to an expensive private college and majored in theater and now works at starbucks, well, they should live with those choices. Personal responsibility.
Notice the economic-conservative pivot on display here. For a few decades, we’ve been hearing the elitist right telling us about the need to privatize Social Security because beneficiaries aren’t getting back what they put in. Now, suddenly, they’re ripping off taxpayers and getting unfairly high benefits.
The major cause of Social Security’s cash flow problem is that a smaller and smaller portion of national income is going to working Americans and becoming part of the Social Security/FICA tax base. If the minimum wage had kept place with inflation, it would have driven greater dollars to working Americans, resulting in higher tax revenue supporting Social Security. We wouldn’t be looking at an imminent imbalance in the “trust fund.”
Raise the minimum wage. Protect Social Security. Two problems with a common solution.
Take off the cap of Social Security (about $120,000) and there will be no more Social Security funding problems. Revamp the student loan situation (don’t have time to get into that now) and we could really do some good for the future. Betsy DeVos might have to wait on that 14th yacht, but that’s not really a bad thing.
There is no such thing as a free lunch; free college; free medical care; free anything. There are price tags attached to everything, including every choice. Some price tags don’t involve money at all, but when they do, always ask “Where will the money to pay for this come from?”
Social Security is the biggest Ponzi Scheme out there. It is not a savings account, you don’t “get back what you put in.” The workers paid money into a system that paid the retirees that lost their savings during the depression. It was supposed to end with the last of that generation. Later in the 60’s, it was reorganized as a way for the government to keep taking our money. They “promise” that as long as we keep paying for this generation’s retirees, there will be money later to pay our generation. However, when the “Trust fund” is depleted, there’s no guarantee it will be there, unless there is a HUGE restructuring soon.As far as the Student Loan fiasco, I’ve never taken out a loan for school. I paid my way through a trade school.
What country is Bok from? Here in the United States we have paid into a separate, Social Security fund to meet our retirement needs at 65. The younger generation is doing the same thing we the older generation have spent our lives paying into. Politicians stealing from that fund deserve nothing less than Guantanamo Bay.
Flat out lie, Bok. Social Security funds itself from payroll deductions, which is why the amount you receive varies, depending on how much you have paid into the fund. Conversely, since the good old days of Reaganomics, money has been taken OUT of the fund to pay for items in the budget. The Republicans want to just raid the rest of it for themselves. And the stupid stupid people who vote these thieves into office believe this doo doo.
I am 75 years old and on social security. I can guarantee that is not me in the golf cart, I am still working at full time job like thousands of others my age and older who are still working depriving a younger person my job because I cannot afford to retire in this “booming economy”. God only knows what will happen to me and the several other thousands like me when the boom turns to bust.
The Dems have solutions for BOTH issues. Stop giving tax cuts to the top (Trump and his buddies in the golf carts) reinstate the tax rates that built the highways so we can invest in modern infrastructure, put money back into the schools rather than just backing loans. Plus invest in NEW technology (renewables) instead of continuing subsidies for fossil fuels and stop corporate agriculture subsidies in favor of research on bees.
Divide and conquer! Thes idea is, if the young are fighting with the old and the “races” one against the other, people might forget who is really collecting the wealth of the country, produced by the hand of the workers. The big T and the 1% are successfully blaming everybody else and even insulting the poorest by slogans like “work harder!” although many of the richest did never work hard, some did not work at all, ever. And Chip Bok is supporting this fraudulent system, where people like Trump are living on the cost of the really working people, while the Reps try to convince the working poor, that Bernie and Alexandria want to expropriate them.

Blatant lie. Social security doesn’t work like that and it’s republican’s predatory lending that’s hurting the students.

Nice try, Boks Car. As usual, a Trumpster seeks to divide us either politically, financially, and/or generationally.

gee, as soon as the GOP RETURNS the funds they “borrowed” from the SS fund, wonder if that might help…
