On Star Trek Next Generation Data seemed pretty singular to me.
I am similar. I am not opposed to the gay mayor running for President because he is gay. I hate him because he wears brown shoes with a blue suit!

There’s no big deal about using “they”. The big deal is with people who insist that others must always use “they”.
the pc police really have a problem when you use “they” to discribe a ethnic,race…. group.
Data don’t count.
I’ve always thought of “data” as a mass noun like “rice” or “sand” or “furniture”. So you have a bunch of data, like a bowl of rice. And you have a piece of data, or a data point, like a grain of rice.
