It was a awhile ago, but when I went to the prom, Christine’s mom re-made her gown from an older one. I wore my Sunday suit. I cleaned and polished the family station wagon, and bought a corsage. My folks took pictures. Her folks took pictures. I did buy two tickets.
Decoration was by the prom committee, with donated crepe paper etc. Music was records.
Total outlay, for two of us: About the price of 10 or a dozen pairs of blue jeans or a few weeks of rent. We did not go out to eat or buy a print from the pro at the prom. We were well off, relatively. Some of the kids who came were less well off and skipped the “new” gown and corsage.

My high school didn’t have a prom any of the four years I was there. That was back in the 60s and we basically thought proms were silly.

It’s just stupid to spend more than you can spare. On whatever it is.

Well, with student loans available for college, why save your own or your parent’s money?
