Looks like the strike is over, and the union won. As they should. Ironically, the parent company of Stop & Shop, Ahold Delhaize, probably pays its European workers much better…

Ugh. I hate self checkout lanes. It’s no so bad if I need to pick up one or two items after work on the night shift, but the local Walmart sometimes has all the checker lanes closed at early as 8 PM. If I’m there with a full cart and see that all the checker lanes have been closed and only the self checkout lanes are open, I literally just leave my full cart where it is and walk out to go somewhere else. The person they were too cheep to pay to check me out can instead get paid to put away the stuff in my cart.

“Today, we live in the richest country in the history of the world, but that reality means little because much of that wealth is controlled by a tiny handful of individuals.”

’The issue of wealth and income inequality is the great moral issue of our time, it is the great economic issue of our time, and it is the great political issue of our time."

I realize it is a futile gesture but I refuse to use the self-checkout lanes. Even if the lines with cashiers are long.

I’m surprised this is big enough to be noted. Hope it goes well for the workers

Stocking shelves still contributes to lower profits.. soon there will just be pallets of stock to choose from. And still the price of groceries goes up.. can you imagine a watermelon costing $9.99 CAD (~$7.50 USD)

I went to S&S the first day of their strike, and was approached by a striker telling me not to shop there. I just told him “if you don’t want me shopping here now, I won’t come back after the strike is over.” We have 4 S&S, 2 Shaws, a Market Basket, a Roche Brothers, and a Seabra within a 5 mile radius. While S&S usually has a better selection than the others, I have no problem going elsewhere for my groceries.

I don’t use self-checkout for this very reason.

You can’t fight automation. It’s here.

I usually shop where there are actually helpful actual people, and thus I also tend to pay a small premium compared to shopping at Wally World and its equivalents. The result is, imo, threefold better:

    1: I get better service

2: The employees get a (slightly) better job.

3: Strangely (sarcasm), when the employees are marginally happier, the produce, meat and baked goods are noticeably better.

Factory-generated “food” is the same no matter where you get it, so I do pay a few extra cents when I buy that stuff other than at the cheapo store. But I try to minimize those purchases anyway.

PS: I also shop our local Farmers Market: Very fresh, very local, very tasty… and moderately expensive, but worth it.

No Stop & Shops here and, by the name, I would have thought it was like Sheetz or 7-11. As to DIY checkouts, I ignore those and use the ones with people. One of my regular stores tried those auto deals and they got little use so they moved them out of the prime spot. They still have them but people prefer to use the human-operated lines. As for Walmart, I went in one once and saw no reason to ever do so again.
