Legendary strip, well and truly. I see it get reposted a lot as an example of peak Peanuts, and Peppermint Patty at her most emotionally real. Had the pleasure to see with my eyes the original ink of this strip at an exhibition earlier this year. https://i.redd.it/9srlqlx6f1a21.jpg
Patty … go by a copy of Travis Tritt’s ode “Here’s a quarter, call someone who cares”. Either that, or go to an orphanage and see how tough some kids’ lives are.
Even though it’s 1972 and she’s a comic character: PP – no one is perfect… the Little Red-Haired Girl is full of imperfections too… and if Charlie Brown ever had that relationship with her, he’d see all of them up close… ;-)
I was always attracted to the pretty girls; I stayed with the girls that I found out that I liked: confident, intelligent and with a good sense of humor.
I suffer from a disorder that I think a lot of men have. The more I like a woman, the better looking she gets. It’s been that way since day one.
On lesson every person (regardless of age, but particularity in the child, tween, teen years) is not to let other people define who you should be. You are a one-of-a-kind masterpiece; literally a work of a lifetime.
Patty, you might not appreciate this, but it may be better to have Chuck as a loyal friend (as I think he is) than a romantic interest. In some cases it is a mistake to let the romance get in the way of the friendship.
In my life, I’ve had few girlfriends and many girl friends.
It’s so easy for an individual to be conscious of all the ways he or she thinks they fall short and completely overlook all of the good qualities they have.
Thank you so much, Charles Schulz, for this strip that shows the sensitivities behind this character who had been long taken to be brash and insensitive herself. In other words, when a kid’s a kid, there aren’t yet many ways in which to stand out from the other kids but the toys you have (or don’t), the smarts you have (or don’t), or the looks you have (or don’t). (For anyone thinking of piping up that what I’ve listed here don’t change at all when you’ve grown up, there are so many different gradations within each of these that hadn’t by then been explored or explained about how girls got to be the ways they were.)
The biggest and most destructive lie on the planet is that “Everyone is special”. The vast majority of us are just average and we know it but that is just fine. We should be teaching kids that being yourself, no matter what that may be, is not a barrier to love or happiness.
The day I realized that this ugly duckling would never be a swan was incredibly liberating. Expectations weigh us down. It’s better to find our truer self and work from there.
The “extreme makeover” mentality needs an extreme makeover. To me the two essential qualities of a beautiful face are kindness and intelligence. The size and shape of the nose? Split ends? Superficial; unrelated to character and substance. You can keep your Paris Hiltons and Britney Spears’s and however many Kardashians there might be cluttering up the vacuous realm of “celebrity.”
On the other hand – I had a friend who seemed to have it all – the looks, perfect blonde hair, a Barbie-doll figure. But she had problems, too. Men didn’t listen to her; they were too busy looking and trying to grope. Women, in the throes of body envy, shied from her. It made her lonely, but for all that, she never acted privileged, or judgmental. Beneath her beauty, she had the kindest of hearts.
This has to be the saddest Peanuts installment I’ve ever read. For some reason I missed its earlier runs. Hopefully there’s an upbeat resolution tomorrow.
It’s things like this which work so much better because the Little Red-Haired Girl is an unseen character, and apparently uninterested in Charlie Brown.

So she’s got the same insecurities as CB. That’s the reason he can’t approach the little red haired girl.

If Charlie Brown is passing over Peppermint Patty for The Little Red-Haired Girl, he’s a sick kid.
