It’s not the use of bags, it’s the material they are composed of…along with the single use plastic bottles and all the other “disposable” plastic junk we make and use for “convenience”.
I believe it was on a Caribbean island (can’t remember which one) that the fences caught the wind blown plastic grocery bags before the could be blown into the sea. The fences were not put up for that purpose and I don’t think they were very effective in protecting the oceans, but it was an ugly sight of shredded yellowish plastic waving in the wind.
Similar to the Republicans’ view on banning inefficient light bulbs – the government belongs out of people’s lives, unless it has something to do with their sex lives, whom they can marry, etc.
I have four Siberian Huskies. I utilize plastic grocery bags to contain their “poop” in the rolling trash containers, since our trash/recycling company requires everything be in “bags”. So their “product” ends up sequestered in plastic in a landfill – this is not a proper solution but it’s the best I could come up with, given the circumstances, here in the hinterlands of New Mexico.
I do verify, once in a while, that the officials of Santa Fe County are not shipping OUR waste to some other, more accommodating site, and I certainly couldn’t condone dumping waste in our lakes, rivers or (Gods forbid) the ocean!
While I can easily afford to have all my waste disposed of either electrically or by burning (properly), not all the people can afford this even if this were offered, but one thing I DO know; trash should NEVER BE “free range”, so to speak!
One easy way to help, is if you have 1 or 2 items, and you don’t need a bag, say so. How many times have you and I put a single loaf of bread into a bag? Here, I’ll supply the dialogue; “That’s fine as it is, I don’t need a bag. Thanks.” Now, how easy is that?_______ “1 good idea X millions = progress.”
