The first day of serving, our son dumped an entire order on a large group of people at a large table. He got off balance and over-corrected. Apparently it happens a lot, especially with new servers.

Whew – four 8 OZ drinks plus four 2 OZ cups plus 4 OZ tray = 44 OZ = nearly 3 pounds tray balanced on an outward (traversed) hand, weight on a tiny and weak wrist? Takes practice and skill. You’re doing just drinks. Wait until you have to do the same thing with PLATES filled up with food. Ceramic plates, metal utensils and weight of the food on each plate on a tray. Sometimes you balance two or three trays at the same time. So, girl, get busy and practice.

Never mind what I said yesterday … cocktail waitress have to be experts at shifting the tray balance when removing drinks.

I predict a lot of ruined clothes, meaning not only no tips for Tiff and Les, but damage payments coming out of her meager paycheck.

In a couple of weeks, we can introduce another new character … the collection agent who wants the credit card bill to be paid, and who won’t accept her explanation that she doesn’t have to pay when she didn’t make any money at her job.

I’ve been a restaurant server. They can make humbling mistakes that make them feel very sorry. I’ve dropped meals on the floor, tipped over drinks onto peoples laps, sent wrong orders to the kitchen, forgotten to send orders to the kitchen, paid bills with the wrong credit card, misplaced a credit card. Being a server is not always easy, especially when several tables must be handled at once, making a mistake more likely. Good luck to Tiffany. She’ll need it!

You know I need to copy my comments so that I can paste them if I check and find out they are not showing. Let me try again. I think it appears that Tiffany is practicing holding a serving tray while modeling her smile and persona as a server, but is finding it not to be that easy. Being a server is a hard job, but perhaps this is a chance for her to grow as a person, and learn to adjust to life, and not have it adjust to her. I am pulling for her, but meanwhile it was funny today, so hilarity ensues. In her defense this is the opposite of being a ditz, or candidate for a strip club (although those jobs are not easy either); I think that this is hope expressed in wetness.

My wife and I met my parents at a nice restaurant one cold January evening to buy them dinner – we mainly did things like that for my Mom as my old man was not exactly a pillar of excellence – I won’t expand on that. The server lost her balance on the tray when she was bringing drinks, and a large sticky, sugary drink with a lot of ice landed squarely in his crotch area. The walk out to the car in the low 30 degree temperature was definitely a bummer for him. Needless to say, I left her a HUGE tip.

Give it time, Tiffany. “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Neither is learning to balance a tray full of drinks. It takes time and PRACTICE.

But here’s a tip: Don’t “Sway.” Especially not in THAT “outfit.”

Which, while required, “regulation” and appropriate, does absolutely nothing, FOR You……, ;)

I’m still baffled by the concept of anybody considering themselves a tycoon by taking a server job where they have to split their tips with a dishwasher but I guess that’s the comics world. If I were Tiff I would have kept in touch with the CEO of Souffle Lingerie and made my start on the US side of her company perhaps.

Having said all that, the physical comedy of Tiffany learning that waiting tables isn’t all that easy is pretty funny. I used to express my admiration for wait staff that balanced plates down one arm.

Second day as a waiter in college, I spilled a plate of spaghetti (with sauce) on myself. Mostly on my pants. They put me behind the take out counter for the rest of my shift because you couldn’t see the marinara on my pants that way. Being a waiter/waitress can be a good way to learn some humility. And having to grin and bear it when you have a difficult customer either teaches you patience and self-control or you can get fired pretty quickly.

What if ALL server jobs were eliminated and replaced with robots. Tiffany would be out of a job and nobody would have to tip anymore. Paying the bill would be done through one of those devices Red Robin has on the tables.

An easy to anticipate outcome, but still humorous!

    So, here are some questions….

    1. Has Tiffany thought about the likely scenario that many of the folks of Pitt and Moony will be stopping by at The Fuse to hang out, buy drinks, etc?

    (hopefully yes)

    2. Is she “ok” with these folks seeing her in her “waitress/server” role? Or, will she become “embarrassed”?

(hopefully she will be “ok” with it)

    3. Will she end up getting hassled in her job? Perhaps by a creep, or Ann, or who knows who.

    (hopefully no)

    * * * *

With regard to today…. if Tiffany’s arrangement with Les holds true…. if Tiffany keeps breaking dishes, spilling food and drink…. will Les be responsible for 1/2 of the cost incurred? :)

She can smile and sway all she wants, it’s not going to affect my tip. I always tip (even though I hate tipping, why not just pay the servers a real wage and charge the customers accordingly?), but I’m likely to tip more if the server is genuinely friendly (and fills my water glass without me asking). I also tend to tip more if the server is genuinely having a hard day. If he or she has a table full of demanding as$holes or things just aren’t going their way, I will try to make their day better with a nice tip.

But if they are at all fake flirty or shaking their butt at me, I’m only going to tip 10%. The bare minimum. Real is always better than fake.

Little Miss Tiff is about to learn the hard way that being a server isn’t that easy. Back in the day, when I was a Sambo’s waitress, Sunday morning shift, you can bet I didn’t drop a tray full of bevies! We didn’t use trays back then. I DID, however, lose some eggs off of a plate because I took the corner too fast and they slid right off the plate and on to the floor. It’s been a long time, but I think my record was 6 or 7 plates of pancakes on one arm. And I can still carry five glasses in one hand. So, Tiff, you got a ways to go, girl!
