    My HS buddies in the honors and AP math classes used to joke that whenever the textbook authors wanted to make a huge leap from premise to conclusion, they would begin with the phrase: “Thus it is obvious to even the most casual observer that ….”

    He should be glad he didn’t have my high-school math teachers. They didn’t allow calculators, you had to show your work.

    Well, yes! Almost anybody can use a calculator to get an answer, but that only shows that they know how to use a calculator! Showing how you came to the conclusion shows how you can use your brain to solve the problem.

    When I was in school they didn’t even have calculators. You had to actually use your head!!
