You can lead a teacher to laughter, but you can’t make her laugh. Especially if she’s sick to death of your darned wisecracks, and there are still months of school left!

As with a few of the bright students that I taught, the quality of Caulfield’s attempts to distract may be suffering from over-use. Every student reached that point in the gamesmanship contest, even those we appreciated. But, there was always another ‘gagster’ available to fill in. Thank goodness for variety.

Caufiled — if you need to know about The Fountain of Youth, check out the 1952 classic Monkey Business with Ginger Rogers and Cary Grant. (Not to be confused with the Marx Bros. 1931 movie of the same title)

Chas Addams had a cartoon showing Ponce de Leon and his crew turned into small boys. wondering who was going to sail their ship home. Possibly an inspiration for this one – the largest part of one Sunday Frazz strip showed two snowboarders riding in parallel except when they curved out around both sides of a tree; in an inset, Caulfield asked Frazz, “What explains what? And who the heck is Charles Addams?”
