There is no “right” or “wrong” here, Corky. You have to make your “Garbage Moment” your own.

Whatever you do, don’t break the plastic bag before it goes into the trash can.

Just think of it as a time for the Stars to shine. They can do now wrong. So can you do wrong putting out the trash? Something the big cities seem to have forgotten, (I have just visited L.A. and San Fransisco — thought that I was in some third-world country).

My apartment building has 6 barrels, and they’re not assigned. Anyone can put trash in any barrel. Our upstairs neighbors have assigned the closest one to themselves, to the point that they would rather overfill it than put trash in other barrels. The problem is, the barrels are in the area where we park (our apartment is the only one with its own driveway) so their overfilling spills out onto our driveway. Talking to them is useless. They will also not move the barrel to where it belongs after the garbage men empty them, but they just put the trash in it, even if it’s in the middle of our driveway.

I work in a hardware store, I have seen people take 45 minutes to choose a light bulb. I don’t know how some people make it through life.

We used to have a really nice night sky where I live: high elevation, low humidity, and low population. Then, post 9/11, the town and all major employers decided that all parking lots must be lit like high noon, all hours of the night. Now the light pollution drowns out almost the entire sky.

We put out household garbage and rubbish for Monday and Thursday mornings at the curb (we had perimeter pickup for the garbage until 2 years ago and did not have to put it at the curb, just in a can where it could be seen from the street). We put out recycling for Tuesday morning. We put out garden waste for Wednesday mornings. We have to call for large pickups or take to the town waste disposal site. Electronics have to be brought to same (no vans without seats, no roof racks on the vehicle, limited amount) or brought to special events which end by 1 pm – and we are just getting dressed and out by then.

I don’t put our can out as the recycling bin that they gave us was destroyed by being thrown in the street by the pickup guys – I got a replacement on by taking the new huge one they gave us and trading it for the never used original one that my in-laws had, when SIL sold their house – so the new owners had a huge bin and we had one that fit in our porch. Also destroyed by being thrown in the street (4 lane main road). I was sure they would do same with our can – and that we would we have to pay to replace. I use it as a holding can if garbage has to go out of house and it is not time to go to curb. I put the plastic bag at the curb for pickup – generally a tall kitchen bag from the kitchen for Mondays or one from upstairs for Thursday unless we don’t have the latter filled when it is time to go out – one bag can last a month upstairs before being filled. I put the cans and bottle in a cardboard box and they take it with same and tie the newspapers, magazines and junk mail (sans address) together and put out.
