Wow, Gunther. Acting openly judgmental and superior to a girl you just met. Usually one waits a few minutes before attacking someone for their life choices, but you just jumped right in and started angrily criticizing her for daring to go on a date with a guy you don’t like (and before she even met you.) Let us know how that tactic works out for you.
Oh, and Luann? Just go away, please. Even your attempts to help come off as condescending, so maybe you should learn to mind your own business for once. Not every gathering requires your input.

Wikitionary defines “dweeb” as "a boring, studious, or socially inept person. Gunther’s so called friends are “defining” him in front of his date. What nerve. Can anyone blame him for being angry? They’ve been treating him as a non-person for years. Luann has her hands all over him as if he were her property. Bets is a very straightforward person. I sincerely believe, in the next two days, that she will straighten out the entire crew, including Gunther, but I think she will continue to date him. I sincerely hope she will help him grow.
I realize that character of Gunther has become a bit aimless of late, being thrown into situations where he has to react in his own limited “Gunther One-Joke” way, rather than take any initiative, but this is just torturing the character. Okay, he was set up on this by Luann, but he looked to be actually ready to take advantage of what appeared to be a pleasant situation – then everyone starts piling in on him. The only good thing I can see coming our of this arc is that Gunther finally gets fed up enough to tell them all where to go, moves out from The Odd Couple house he shares with Les and tries again on his own power with Bets. Or whoever. This is getting sad.
This could be the beginning of some serious growth for Gunther. If this jolts him into the realization that the people surrounding him are going to keep sabotaging him, maybe he’ll finally get the motivation to move out and start getting somemore control over his own environment. Of course, he’ll still need to work on his nasty possessiveness, but baby steps…
Mom, How did you and dad meet? Well son, we met through a dating app. our first date envolved a group of people who knew us well. It really helped to break the ice. It was an intersting first date. :D
Lighten up people! Remember this “date” all started on April First! It started with a Kablooie panel and has ended with one today. I know 1212’s stomach is suffering from hilarity cramps about now. Then there’s the one ear on and one ear off weirdness; plus the somewhat odd buttinski attitudes from all present. This is some sort of elaborate set up – and it ain’t over yet!
This April Fools prank by Greg may eventually wind up as:
• A nightmare of Gunther’s prior to his upcoming date with Bets.
• A one off April Fools joke date leading nowhere. KABLOOIE, as the last panel reminds us.
• Or the gag may just be that this “first date” is starting out so insanely that it’ll probably all work out between them. Gunther will have his long sought relationship. At least for awhile! ;o)
I’m betting on the third guess. This gag has been set up a little too elaborately and is actually a watershed for Gunther and his relationship with females. If so, one good point is that Bets is inoculated-by-contact against Les-itis. So Les can’t mess up Gunther’s relationship with her. Mordy, you should be trippin’ over that! :o)
Sadly, for me, there is nothing but annoyance at all five characters being portrayed today. All, IMO, are now behaving in ways that are not great. The whole thing is just…. sad.

1. I think we would think Luann would be helping better if she used geek rather than dweeb. In this day and age people don’t always find geek culture to be a bad thing and technically being a Trekkie is a geek culture.
2. The hate for Luann is com I g from how she is written sometimes. It like a TV Trope, no matter how mature the character, the writer will fall back on them being immature for effect.
3. I do not get where all the hate for Les is coming from. Was he a bully in high school? Yes. Was is a thieving jerk for a while? Yes. But I think between his uncle’s help and the Luann gang influence he might become a nice character. I’m want, look at how Brad and Luann mature throughout this run. In the beginning you’d never think of Brad as anymore that an anxious couch potato.
I wonder what Bets thinks of both Les and Luann calling Gunther a “dweeb” albeit a sweet one according to Luann. Does that mean they consider HER a dweeb as well because she likes Star Trek?

Ok short verison of it: Luann the character should have used term geek instead cause geek culture not bad and Trekkie is geek culture. Luann hate coming from tropes of writing good characters dumb/immature for effect. Give Les a a chance, remeber how Brad was.
Gunther getting mad: I speculated yesterday that his real purpose in this strip may now be that of Donald (Duck, not Trump). Many have described him as the doormat of the strip, and that certainly seems to be the case.
But it has been appearing to me (methinks Pipe Tobacco has seen it, too) that the purpose of all this abuse is simply to watch Gunther blow his stack.

We loved it when Popeye lost it – but we love to hate Gunther when he loses it.

Gunther is going to ruin his chances with Bets with his anger. All he has to do is stay calm and talk to Bets. Anger is a huge turn off, especially on the first date.
Luann moves to the back of Gunther placing her hands on his shoulders. This signals ownership. Ox moves into the picture and perhaps Bets may find him interesting.
It will be interesting if Gunther & Bets hit it off. Maybe an emergency for both Luann and Tiffany. I’d like to see Tiffany make a big effort to reel Gunther in.
Looks to me like G&K may be getting ideas for their story arcs from watching old TV sitcoms. As someone stated above, no matter how mature, smart or whatever a character on a show appears to be, if the writers want to “regress” them as a plot device, they do it. That seems to be what G&K are doing.
Example: I thought Luann was beginning to show some maturity? common sense? whatever you want to call it. (Look at the way she helped Fay and Jack. ) But now she’s acting like air-headed Chrissy the Clueless from the old Three’s Company series. That and other old sitcoms are where I think G&K are getting their inspiration. I’m sure THEY think it’s hilarious——and they’re the one’s making the money——and if the rest of us don’t like it, we can go read something else, so……..
Speaking of Three’s Company, wait til G&K hit on the plot line where the Larry character was acting like a jerk on dates, but since he told the girls he dated his name was Jack Tripper, they all had it in for Jack. I can see it now——-Les tells every girl he dates that his name is Gunther Berger, so Gunthie’s getting hate mail, threats, etc and he doesn’t know why………

This is one of the many reasons I love this strip. The comments section shows just how invested we all are in these imaginary characters. This is consistently the longest comment thread on GoComics which says something about fan dedication. I mean I don’t recall anything at all like this since the letters section of Fantastic Four became two pages long in the sixties! I remember the philosophical discussions about the Silver Surfer story arc and I have no doubt it could have become quite heated if they published every single letter. That made comic book history.
All the Luannhaters have conveniently forgotten that she set up the online profile of Gunther, so she was trying to help him meet people. If she seems overly involved in his date, maybe it’s because she’s genuinely happy to see that he followed up, and she feels almost like a relative of Gunther’s who introduced him to her new neighbor. The slightly interesting thing, to me, is that if Gunther moves anywhere physically near Luann, it’s ok, and everyone is all about ‘kiss her already’. If Luann touches Gunther, it’s because she’s being possessive. If she fondly calls him a ‘sweet dweeb’, she’s a terrible person. If Ox calls him an ‘elf’ it’s just great. This ’toon is mirroring all the hate going on right now in the outside world, and is no longer a place we can turn to for relief from that.
Ahhhhh. Spring is in the Air! The Flowers are blooming! The trees are budding! The grass is growing! And the Sounds of Chaos Fills the Air! I LOVE the sound of Chaos in the morning! It sound like……, Chaos!
Okay. This has gone on long enough. It’s time I defused at least one of the “bombs” I set. And while I do that a couple of points:
1) I kinda think (hope) that this IS either a Bad Dream on Gunther’s part or an April Fool’s joke by G&K. I mean, look at Luann. In all the years I’ve reading this Strip She has never acted this thoughtless, oblivious, or immature. She’s been TOTALLY out of character. Plus she’s had this crazed wild-eyed look on her face. Hopefully this arc ends with Gunther waking up from a bad dream.
2) Bets. I like her, whether she’s dated Les or not. She’s sharp, attractive, (if a guy can still say that) and strong. Now a number of “folks” ASSUME she’s Gunther’s next “love Interest.” But what if in reality she’s actually Les’ first real girlfriend? Think about it. Les had one date with Bets that didn’t work out well. But he Now sees her with Gunther, and suddenly he decides to “clean up his act” once and for all. She gives HIM a second chance and He manages to spirit Bets away from Gunther. And Les and Bets become an item.
3) Les. I still don’t like him, but Bets might be the one thing HE needs to straighten up. Plus being with and attentive to Bets when gain him new fans plus prove that even though he’s a lowlife. He’s not a racist lowlife.
4) Gunther. The One Hope I have is that he wakes up at the end of this arc and finds that the whole thing was a bad dream. And that he IMMEDIATELY Deletes his Date Pic profile and FORGETS the whole dating App business. Then later he goes over to Tiffany’s place and after she goes on for an hour and a half about her “new business plan,” Gunther suggests that Tiffany set up a booth at the Trek Connek painting Star Trek Characters/Logo on fingernails.Well I can Dream, right? Now what wire do I cut?
Allright!!! these two now each have one strike against (metaphorically speaking) so they’re even. No match is made in heaven; they just got a head start. The peanut gallery needs to clear out and let these two resume getting acquainted so they can move on to the trekconnec convention. I see a match in the making…. is my hope …
Captain…Captain…we’re saved!!! We didn’t sustain permanent damage and have to eject the core or abandon ship. Ok, then make repairs to the Warp Drive and go Warp Factor 3 to Vulcan. Aye Aye sir!!!
I know that Funther is supposed to be the nice guy. But the more I see him, the more I disagree. Nothing wrong with being shy, sweet and a little naive, but he is extremely judgmental. Not a good trait.
In some ways Vulcans are the old fashioned kind of Elves that Tolkien wanted to show in his work. Not the modern version that made them into little people.
Uh, Gunther lied on his date pic profile too. In fact he had Luann write it for him, so pick your poisen. Also, he seems to be very insecure and judgmental, especially about who you have dated. I’d worry, Bets.
Great. With friends like these, who needs enemies? What started out seeming like a great date for Gunther and Bets has been rapidly devolved into a circus of recriminations by the carrion-eater “friends” of Gunther, led by an unattractive Luann….

If this jolts him into the realization that the people surrounding him are going to keep sabotaging him, maybe he’ll finally get the motivation to move out and start getting somemore control over his own environment. Of course, he’ll still need to work on his nasty possessiveness, but baby steps…

Lighten up people! Remember this “date” all started on April First! It started with a Kablooie panel and has ended with one today. I know 1212’s stomach is suffering from hilarity cramps about now. Then there’s the one ear on and one ear off weirdness; plus the somewhat odd buttinski attitudes from all present. This is some sort of elaborate set up – and it ain’t over yet!
This April Fools prank by Greg may eventually wind up as:
• A nightmare of Gunther’s prior to his upcoming date with Bets.
• A one off April Fools joke date leading nowhere. KABLOOIE, as the last panel reminds us.
• Or the gag may just be that this “first date” is starting out so insanely that it’ll probably all work out between them. Gunther will have his long sought relationship. At least for awhile! ;o)
I’m betting on the third guess. This gag has been set up a little too elaborately and is actually a watershed for Gunther and his relationship with females. If so, one good point is that Bets is inoculated-by-contact against Les-itis. So Les can’t mess up Gunther’s relationship with her. Mordy, you should be trippin’ over that! :o)

Sadly, for me, there is nothing but annoyance at all five characters being portrayed today. All, IMO, are now behaving in ways that are not great. The whole thing is just…. sad.

1. I think we would think Luann would be helping better if she used geek rather than dweeb. In this day and age people don’t always find geek culture to be a bad thing and technically being a Trekkie is a geek culture.
2. The hate for Luann is com I g from how she is written sometimes. It like a TV Trope, no matter how mature the character, the writer will fall back on them being immature for effect.
3. I do not get where all the hate for Les is coming from. Was he a bully in high school? Yes. Was is a thieving jerk for a while? Yes. But I think between his uncle’s help and the Luann gang influence he might become a nice character. I’m want, look at how Brad and Luann mature throughout this run. In the beginning you’d never think of Brad as anymore that an anxious couch potato.

Ok short verison of it: Luann the character should have used term geek instead cause geek culture not bad and Trekkie is geek culture. Luann hate coming from tropes of writing good characters dumb/immature for effect. Give Les a a chance, remeber how Brad was.

Got other things to do today. Last shot:
Gunther getting mad: I speculated yesterday that his real purpose in this strip may now be that of Donald (Duck, not Trump). Many have described him as the doormat of the strip, and that certainly seems to be the case.
But it has been appearing to me (methinks Pipe Tobacco has seen it, too) that the purpose of all this abuse is simply to watch Gunther blow his stack.
Which may be Saturday’s installment.
We loved it when Popeye lost it – but we love to hate Gunther when he loses it.

Looks to me like G&K may be getting ideas for their story arcs from watching old TV sitcoms. As someone stated above, no matter how mature, smart or whatever a character on a show appears to be, if the writers want to “regress” them as a plot device, they do it. That seems to be what G&K are doing.
Example: I thought Luann was beginning to show some maturity? common sense? whatever you want to call it. (Look at the way she helped Fay and Jack. ) But now she’s acting like air-headed Chrissy the Clueless from the old Three’s Company series. That and other old sitcoms are where I think G&K are getting their inspiration. I’m sure THEY think it’s hilarious——and they’re the one’s making the money——and if the rest of us don’t like it, we can go read something else, so……..
Speaking of Three’s Company, wait til G&K hit on the plot line where the Larry character was acting like a jerk on dates, but since he told the girls he dated his name was Jack Tripper, they all had it in for Jack. I can see it now——-Les tells every girl he dates that his name is Gunther Berger, so Gunthie’s getting hate mail, threats, etc and he doesn’t know why………

This is one of the many reasons I love this strip. The comments section shows just how invested we all are in these imaginary characters. This is consistently the longest comment thread on GoComics which says something about fan dedication. I mean I don’t recall anything at all like this since the letters section of Fantastic Four became two pages long in the sixties! I remember the philosophical discussions about the Silver Surfer story arc and I have no doubt it could have become quite heated if they published every single letter. That made comic book history.

All the Luannhaters have conveniently forgotten that she set up the online profile of Gunther, so she was trying to help him meet people. If she seems overly involved in his date, maybe it’s because she’s genuinely happy to see that he followed up, and she feels almost like a relative of Gunther’s who introduced him to her new neighbor. The slightly interesting thing, to me, is that if Gunther moves anywhere physically near Luann, it’s ok, and everyone is all about ‘kiss her already’. If Luann touches Gunther, it’s because she’s being possessive. If she fondly calls him a ‘sweet dweeb’, she’s a terrible person. If Ox calls him an ‘elf’ it’s just great. This ’toon is mirroring all the hate going on right now in the outside world, and is no longer a place we can turn to for relief from that.

Ahhhhh. Spring is in the Air! The Flowers are blooming! The trees are budding! The grass is growing! And the Sounds of Chaos Fills the Air! I LOVE the sound of Chaos in the morning! It sound like……, Chaos!
Okay. This has gone on long enough. It’s time I defused at least one of the “bombs” I set. And while I do that a couple of points:
1) I kinda think (hope) that this IS either a Bad Dream on Gunther’s part or an April Fool’s joke by G&K. I mean, look at Luann. In all the years I’ve reading this Strip She has never acted this thoughtless, oblivious, or immature. She’s been TOTALLY out of character. Plus she’s had this crazed wild-eyed look on her face. Hopefully this arc ends with Gunther waking up from a bad dream.
2) Bets. I like her, whether she’s dated Les or not. She’s sharp, attractive, (if a guy can still say that) and strong. Now a number of “folks” ASSUME she’s Gunther’s next “love Interest.” But what if in reality she’s actually Les’ first real girlfriend? Think about it. Les had one date with Bets that didn’t work out well. But he Now sees her with Gunther, and suddenly he decides to “clean up his act” once and for all. She gives HIM a second chance and He manages to spirit Bets away from Gunther. And Les and Bets become an item.
3) Les. I still don’t like him, but Bets might be the one thing HE needs to straighten up. Plus being with and attentive to Bets when gain him new fans plus prove that even though he’s a lowlife. He’s not a racist lowlife.
4) Gunther. The One Hope I have is that he wakes up at the end of this arc and finds that the whole thing was a bad dream. And that he IMMEDIATELY Deletes his Date Pic profile and FORGETS the whole dating App business. Then later he goes over to Tiffany’s place and after she goes on for an hour and a half about her “new business plan,” Gunther suggests that Tiffany set up a booth at the Trek Connek painting Star Trek Characters/Logo on fingernails.Well I can Dream, right? Now what wire do I cut?
